Where Are You?

When David Byrne famously asked “Well, how did I get here?” in the Talking Heads’ “Once in a Lifetime,” he wasn’t just having an existential crisis. He was asking, “Where is ‘here,’ and how is it different from ‘there’?” These questions of location, of how we fit into our landscape, have plagued everyone from poets to pop songwriters, and now six Chicago-based artists address these queries at the exhibition Here and Elsewhere at Boots Contemporary Art Space (2307 Cherokee Street). The exhibition opens with a reception from 6:30 to 10 p.m. on Friday, July 13, and the show remains up through Sunday, August 19. In addition to the artworks, the gallery hosts a series of screenings on Saturday, Wednesday and Friday (July 14, 18 and 20). These curated videos offer a varied approach to the issues of borders, boundaries and the ways we define ourselves geographically. You may want to bring a compass. The screenings take place at 8:30 p.m. each night, and admission is $5. For more information call 314-772-2668 or visit www.bootsart.com.
Sat., July 14; Saturdays, Sundays; Wed., July 18; Fri., July 20. Starts: July 14. Continues through Aug. 19
