Bruce Hornsby

8 p.m. Saturday, July 14. Budweiser Main Stage, on the Arch grounds, as part of Live on the Levee.

Bruce Hornsby's big singles in the '80s, particularly "Every Little Kiss" and "Mandolin Rain," brought a little bit of the heartland into contemporary pop with the same early-autumn wistfulness that aided Steve Winwood's resurgence. Hornsby's chart-topping hits only hinted at his broad musical palette, though: In the past twenty years he's sat in with the Grateful Dead and played bluegrass with Ricky Skaggs, while this August sees the release of Camp Meeting, Hornsby's instrumental jazz debut with bassist Christian McBride and drummer Jack DeJohnette. His Live on the Levee appearance will be with the Noise Makers, his touring band that gives a kick of jam-band freedom to Hornsby's hits and assorted covers.
