Down In Front

Movie fanatics, insomniacs and the criminally sarcastic may remember the glory days of television, when Comedy Central aired Mystery Science Theatre 3000 every night starting at midnight. The show that dared to say what we were all thinking about crappy movies served as an inspiration to fearless young snarks everywhere, and may be directly responsible for the creation of the DVD commentary track. Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett were not just writers for MST3K, they also “starred” on the show as the voices of wise-cracking robots Tom Servo and Crow T. Robot, respectively. Hail them as geniuses now and forever! Murphy and Corbett breeze through town as the media guests of honor at Archon, the region’s premier science fiction/fantasy convention, this Thursday through Saturday (August 2 through 5) at the Gateway Center (1 Gateway Drive, Collinsville, Illinois; 636-326-3026 or www.archonstl.org). They take part in the opening ceremonies at 6 p.m. Thursday, then conduct a “Working with Puppets” seminar at 3 p.m. Saturday, followed by a “MST3K Q&A” at 5 p.m. the same day. Admission is $50 for Thursday and Friday together, $60 for Saturday and $30 on Sunday, or just bite the bullet and become a member for $120, which includes all four days. That last one’s clearly the deal.
