Marxism Sweeps Schlafly

The talkies couldn’t have come at a better time for the Marx Brothers. The comedy team (they really were brothers) had been a smash on Broadway, and it wasn’t long till they were courted by Hollywood. Adapted from their Broadway show of the same title, their second film, Animal Crackers, is a bit static in its direction, but the comedy hasn’t dated a lick. Groucho is African explorer Captain Spaulding, the guest of honor at a party hosted by perfect foil Margaret Dumont. When a prized painting goes missing, Chico and Harpo radiate anarchy, while Groucho quips a mile-a-minute as the Brothers “help” solve the case. The Webster Film Series screens Animal Crackers Wednesday at 8 p.m. at Schlafly Bottleworks (7260 Southwest Avenue, Maplewood; 314-968-7487 or www.webster.edu/filmseries). Admission is $4.
Wed., Aug. 1
