Festival of a Nation

How do you know the Missouri Botanical Garden’s Japanese Festival is a St. Louis institution? By the way St. Louisans seem to take these three days of anime screenings, boxed sake and sumo wrestling for granted. We just expect to spend every Labor Day weekend ogling kimono models and slurping down yakisoba noodles. Luckily, the Missouri Botanical Garden (4344 Shaw Boulevard) isn’t resting on its ikebana laurels -- the festival keeps on expanding like Godzilla. Along with the taiko drumming, martial-arts exhibitions and bonsai demonstrations we’ve all come to expect, this year adds several presentations by a geisha that promise to lift the silk curtain on that mysterious world. The good times run from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday (September 1 through 3). Tickets are $10 for adults, $7 for seniors, and $3 for kids twelve and younger. Call 314-577-9400 or visit www.mobot.org for the complete schedule and to buy tickets in advance.
