In Between Days

Society is stratified along male/female lines -- there are acceptable boy colors and girl colors, games, words, clothing, you name it. But if you’re not one or the other, does that mean you’re no longer acceptable? Israeli writer Ronny Almog is transgender in a country where the gender differentiation is quite pronounced; Almog’s experience of “growing up transgender in Tel Aviv” serves as the basis for the play Somewhere in Between. Almog’s main impetus in creating the play was to explore the idea of the third possibility: not living as a man or woman but remaining in between the two and having this “other” life be as fulfilling -- and as accepted -- as either of the traditional genders. The Israeli theater company Ben L Ben, as the guest of Ragged Blade Theatre Company, presents Somewhere in Between at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday (September 13 through 15) at the Theatre at St. John’s (5000 Washington Place; 314-276-8693 or www.raggedblade.com). Tickets are $10.
Sept. 13-15
