A Sketchy Situation
When Molly Crabapple worked as a life model in art school, she found it all to be quite dull. Then in 2005, Crabapple created Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School. Yes, her answer to liven up your run-of-the-mill life-drawing class was to subtract the bored models, replace them with a few drag queens and/or burlesque performers, then add booze. And it worked. Dr. Sketchy Anti-Art (www.drsketchy.com) spread from New York City to more than 25 cities in the United States and throughout Europe, Asia and Australia. Lucky for us, it’s even come to St. Louis. So, grab your easel and a few charcoal sticks to join model Lola van Ella of Alley Cat Revue fame for the first Dr. Sketchy Anti-Art in the city. She’s joined by other burlesque models today for an afternoon of uninhibited drawing at Atomic Cowboy (4140 Manchester Avenue; 314-775-0775 or www.atomic-cowboy.com) from 3 to 6 p.m. Admission is $5, you need to bring your own art supplies, and there will be ridiculous drawing contests with fabulous prizes.
