Dem Bones
Before Ms. Day was the acclaimed Night & Day writer you know her as today, she thought she might want to go into a different line of work: that of an archaeologist. She dreamed of digging up dinosaur bones and unlocking the secrets of the past by learning about these ancient creatures and their lives. Despite the fact that Day didn’t pursue the scientific arts, she still gets to don the archaeologist hat during the Archaeology Month celebrations at Mastodon State Historic Site (1050 Charles J. Becker Drive, Imperial; 636-464-2976 or www.mostateparks.com/mastodon.htm). This special property is home to the Kimmswick Bone Bed, a place where the skeletons of mastodons and other animals were found in the early 1800s. From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., you can join Ms. Day in touring the extinct creatures’ final resting spot hourly, and we’ll also learn how the Native Americans started fires, threw spears, ground corn and more. All of this old, old time fun is free (including admission to the site’s museum) -- no archaeologist hat required.
