Kevin Costner’s big-budget, small-excitement film Waterworld is widely regarded as a prime example of a blockbuster flop. But what made it a failure? Was it too convoluted? Too long? Too far-fetched? Perhaps the problem with the film is one of subject/title agreement: If you’re gonna call it Waterworld, you'd better make sure that water is the star of the film. The Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts gives water its due with the free public program Films at the Pulitzer: Water Works. Local filmmakers were challenged to create short, silent films that rely on life-giving H2O as a key element. The submitted films, which range in style from narrative to experimental to animated, are projected on the walls of the Pulitzer beginning at 7 p.m. tonight. The cinematic works serve as an adjunct to the Pulitzer’s current show, Water, and reference the museum’s courtyard water feature. Speaking of which, a select number of the films are screened in the courtyard while musician Richard O’Donnell creates a live soundtrack on original instruments that use water to create or modify sound. Water, water everywhere and not a drop to drink -– but other libations will be available for your enjoyment.
