The Birds

Architect-turned-visual-artist Alexander Schweder makes films and installations that often use architecture as a theme. But for his 36-minute-long looped film Murmurs, he focused only on thousands of starlings that wheel over a Roman suburb. Using the birds’ collective calls and individual songs as an audio source, he collaged and manipulated his footage to produce a maelstrom of sudden movement and sound to create art that approximates the feeling of being lost in a massive crowd. Murmurs is on display in Gallery 301 at the Saint Louis Art Museum in Forest Park (314-721-0072 or www.slam.org)through Sunday, January 6. Admission is free.
Tuesdays-Sundays. Starts: Oct. 2. Continues through Jan. 6, 2007
