Here There Be Monsters

The OMNIMAX screen at the Saint Louis Science Center (5050 Oakland Avenue; www.slsc.org) is five stories high, but is that large enough to contain the might and majesty of the aquatic beasties of the Late Cretaceous Period? Yes -- but just barely. The new National Geographic film Sea Monsters: A Prehistoric Adventure uses high-tech computer animation to depict the life of a dolichorynchops (thankfully shortened to just “Dolly”) as she ekes out a life at the bottom of the food chain. Giant crocodiles, ancient varieties of sharks and the mighty mosasaur were her predators then; in modern times, her bones are hunted by paleontologists seeking to find out more about her world. Sea Monsters screens at 10 a.m., 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Monday, October 8, and tickets are $7 to $8. Call 314-289-4424 for information regarding other show times.
