St. Louisans can barely fly to Chicago without having a layover someplace that doesn’t make any sense, so we can only imagine that journeying to anywhere in Africa would take damn near a week -- and who has that kind of free time (and patience)? Instead of dealing with the trassle (travel hassle) this weekend and next, just stay put and check out a few films during the University of Missouri-St. Louis’ E. Desmond Lee Africa World Documentary Film Festival. More than 60 works, all of which were submitted during UMSL’s worldwide documentary-film competition, will be screened Thursday through Sunday (October 4 through 7) at the Tivoli Theatre (6350 Delmar Boulevard, University City) and Thursday through Saturday (October 11 through 13) at the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis (3750 Washington Boulevard). The documentaries scheduled on Friday, October 5, cover much ground, from African children discussing what it’s like to be HIV positive (Living with Slim: Kids Talk About HIV/AIDS) to the struggles of communities in Brazil that were founded by runaway slaves (Quilombo Country, narrated by Chuck D).
