If the Days Could Last Forever…

It’s hard to write about the Deutsch Country Days. Or, rather, it’s difficult to choose what not to write about the Deutsch Country Days. Everything that happens during this get-back-to-basics old-fashioned fair seems worth mentioning! Like all of the food: home-baked pretzels, Amish peanut brittle, preserves, funnel cakes, stuffed-on-the-spot sausages -- the list goes on and on. And then there are so many crafts: You’ve got your quilting and chair-caning, your candle-dipping and lye-soap-making. And we can’t forget about the cool period buildings you can visit during the German weekend, including the Eric Sloane Covered Bridge, the Sorghum Mill, the Smoke Haus and the Schwoeppe Barn. And once again, we’ve barely covered anything! You’ll just have to head out to the Luxenhaus Farm (18055 Highway O, near Marthasville) to see for yourself. Deutsch Country Days run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday (October 20 and 21), and admission costs $6 to $15 (parking is free). For more information and for directions, call 636-433-5669 or visit www.deutschcountrydays.org.
