Into the Woods
Artist Joshua Mosley’s digital-animation piece dread was well received at the Venice Biennale this past year. In the piece philosophers Pascal and Rousseau debate the nature of God and, um, nature in the woods; their discussion is aided by a cow and a giant beetle. The arrival of a man-eating dog throws everything -- the film and the philosophical ramifications of the discussion -- into a much darker place. Mosley created the resin sculptures (as well as bronze versions of the characters), animated the digital footage he himself shot and even composed the score -- now, that’s commitment to personal vision. An exhibition of his video and animation work at the St. Louis Community College-Florissant Valley Art Gallery (3400 Pershall Road; 314-513-4375 or www.joshuamosley.com) opens on Thursday, November 1, with a 6:30 p.m. lecture by the artist. Mosley’s work remains on display through Friday, December 7; the gallery is open Monday through Saturday.
