Tabla for Two, Please

A Beatle-freak kid asks for a copy of George Harrison’s The Concert for Bangladesh for his sixteenth birthday. He discovers he loves side one the most out of the whole triple-album box; that side is a mesmerizing section of Indian music performed by Ravi Shankar on sitar, complemented by luminaries such as Ali Akbar Khan on tabla. Years later, the grown kid is excited to learn another stellar tabla player, Sandip Burman, performs tonight at 7 p.m. at Marbles Yoga Studio (1905 Park Avenue; 314-621-4744 or www.marblesyoga.com). Burman is a tabla virtuoso who focuses on the rich Northern Indian classical tradition, but he’s also stretched out enough to have collaborated with Western musicians as diverse as Béla Fleck, Jack DeJohnette and Danny Elfman. Should be a fantastic evening. Tickets are $18 in advance or $25 at the door; Marbles recommends early purchase, as space is limited.
