If you haven't gone for a long walk on a cold and clear winter's night, get over to the Mississippi Sanctuary (2213 South Levis Lane, Godfrey, Illinois; 618-462-6802) at 7 p.m. this evening for the Sierra Club's monthly moonlight hike. This time of year the stars are sharp-edged, the sky is endless, and the world seems as simple and peaceful as all those Christmas carols claim it is. The hourlong hike is free, and you get snacks and beverages at the end. Not a bad gift for yourself at all, and it's the perfect holiday reset for your weary soul.
