As has been documented in these pages, Ms. Day fancies herself a bit of a partier. She did her fair share of dancing up and down Washington Avenue back in its heyday, and she's certainly clubbed with the best of them on the coasts and beyond. But Gaslight Square is one important locale that disappeared before she could shake things up there, and she regrets not having been born earlier (much, much earlier, mind you) so she could party alongside folks in the legendary district. Fortunately, Brandt's Café & Red Carpet Lounge (6525 Delmar Boulevard, University City; 314-727-3663 or www.brandtscafe.com) keeps the gaslights lit, so to speak, with events like tonight's A Gaslight Square New Year's Eve. After all, that important square was nothing without its music, and Brandt's regularly features performers from those long-gone venues. On this special night, Mae Wheeler, Jeanne Trevor and Hugh "Peanuts" Whalum (pictured) all jazz it up beginning at 8 p.m. To catch some of the show while enjoying a four-course meal, choose the second dinner seating (at 8:30 p.m.), and pay $75. And to keep the fun going until after midnight with more food, more music and more drinks, pay an additional $15 to $30. With any luck (and a few cocktails), Day will feel like she's been transported back in time. And so will you!
