There's always so much hype leading up to New Year's Eve, and the end result is often nowhere close to your initial lofty ambition (yeah, we just played darts in Terrence's basement and watched the Times Square ball drop on TV). Make this year the first year you exceed your own expectations at Grand Center's First Night 2008: Rhythm of the Night (on North Grand Boulevard from Delmar Boulevard to Lindell Boulevard). First Night begins at 5:30 p.m. with a musical procession of drummers, bagpipers, kazooists and dancers and continues with a huge array of events throughout pedestrian-friendly Grand Center. Catch one of the three performances of St. Louis: The Operetta, an original theatrical piece created by Squonk Opera (pictured) especially for First Night; roam the open houses at Grand Center's many theaters, churches and performance spaces, and enjoy special activities such as storytellers, movies and live-art happenings; and, of course, thrill to fireworks displays, which are at 9 p.m. for the early-nighters and midnight for the traditionalists. Purchase admission buttons ($4 to $10) at the event, or get them early at any Borders Books & Music or Starbucks Coffee location and save $2. First Night is an alcohol-free, family-friendly event. For more details call 314-289-8121 or visit www.grandcenter.org/firstnight.
