Suppose you're a young artist. You believe you have the talent and you have the desire to make things, but you don't have the practical experience of making something expressly for an exhibition. It's a psychological barrier you have to cross if you're going to thrive; the show's the thing for working artists, emphasis on "working." The art students of Ladue Horton Watkins High School and John Burroughs High School are receiving a valuable lesson in this particular area, thanks to the Bruno David Gallery (3721 Washington Boulevard; 314-531-3030 or www.brunodavidgallery.com). Two separate shows featuring works created by junior and senior art students open at the gallery on consecutive weekends, helping the young artists get over the first big hump of life as professionals. The Ladue Horton Watkins student show opens with a free public reception from 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday and then closes on Saturday (January 18 and 19). The John Burroughs exhibition is the following Friday and Saturday (January 25 and 26). If you wish to help these artists lose their amateur status, go ahead and buy something; if you don't, the students get to experience the thrill of storing unsold work. It's all part of the trade.
