The Other Newsworthy 40

Powell Symphony Hall (718 North Grand Boulevard) opened in 1925 as the St. Louis Theatre, a vaudeville and cinema space, and the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra didn't move into the gorgeous building until 1968. In fact, the first SLSO performance at Powell happened 40 years ago today! To commemorate this special date, the orchestra throws a party tonight like only it knows how: with music by Mozart, Scott Joplin (performed by pianist Barbara Liberman, pictured) and others. This evening's concert is complemented by a few words from musicians who played the building's grand reopening and a few more from David Robertson (current music director of the orchestra); Elizabeth Sayad, co-chair of the opening gala concert and events committee, also makes an appearance. Of course, everyone knows that the blissful union of the SLSO and Powell could not continue for another 40 years without you, dear reader, so this concert is free — you know, to show you some appreciation and all.
