Turangalîla-philia

Olivier Messiaen's Turangalîla Symphony appropriates structural concepts and sounds from Indian music, ancient Greek rhythms, gamelan orchestras and the composer's beloved birdsongs. Turangalîla is a blockbuster of a piece, and it requires a great deal of background to fully appreciate Messiaen's many allusions and themes. Fortunately, David Robertson and the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra are happy to guide you through its intricacies with Discover Messiaen'sTurangalîla Symphony. The performance occurs at 7:30 p.m. at the Touhill Performing Arts Center on the University of Missouri-St. Louis campus (1 University Drive at Natural Bridge Road; 314-516-4949 or www.touhill.org), and is preceded by a Robertson-led multimedia discussion of the source material. Tickets are $15 to $35.
