The Walkmen/White Rabbits/White Denim

9 p.m. Monday, January 21. Blueberry Hill's Duck Room, 6504 Delmar Boulevard, University City.

Since the release of the Walkmen's exploratory, epic 2004 album Bows & Arrows, the "Bob Dylan as frontman" aesthetic has become something of an indie rock cliché, with countless imitators diluting the original's vocal style. But Hamilton Leithauser's drunk-at-noon warbling is only one ingredient in the hypnotic and overdriven sound of this New York quintet. With its ability to move with ease between the tender and introspective to the bombastic and hard-driving, the Walkmen has always managed to set itself apart with a sound firmly rooted in upright-piano twinkles and haunting, vintage-organ crunch. The band's long-anticipated album of originals is due out this spring (its last release was a note-for-note remake of Harry Nilsson's 1974 album Pussy Cats), so expect to hear plenty of new material and get a good sense of where it's heading at this show. White Rabbits and White Denim open.
