Bird's the Word

Contrary to popular belief, birds don't really feel the spirit of all this Fat Tuesday business. After all, their breasts are always out and no one ever notices or gives them any beads. To show the feathered ones some love (sans plastic necklaces) on this special Saturday, head to the Missouri Botanical Garden (4344 Shaw Boulevard; 314-577-9506) for the Backyard Bird Festival. From 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., binoculars will be out and birds will be watched by enthusiasts of all ages. The garden offers three guided bird walks, and folks from places like the World Bird Sanctuary will be on hand from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. to show you some avian amigos up close. It costs $10 to $15 to participate in the festival, and advance registration is required at www.mobot.org/education.
