When most musicians come to town to perform, they're in and out in a matter of hours, leaving us locals with few opportunities for chance brushes with celebrity at watering holes or other neighborhood spots. But this won't be the case with trumpeter Terell Stafford — he's staying in St. Louis for a week! Perhaps it's because the St. Louis-based label MAXJAZZ put out his most recent album, Taking Chances: Live at the Dakota, or maybe Stafford just loves our jazz scene. Whatever the reason, you'll have several chances to hang with him. For starters at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, February 19, you can go to the Centene Center for Arts & Education (3547 Olive Street) for the latest installment of Jazz St. Louis' Jazz Perspectives series, featuring Stafford. During this event the horn player will discuss his jazzy life, and you'll pay just $10 to get into the talk. Then, to hear Stafford play with his quintet, get to Jazz at the Bistro (3536 Washington Boulevard; 314-534-3663) by 8:30 or 10:15 p.m. on Friday or Saturday (February 22 or 23). Admission to any concert costs $25, and tickets for all events can be purchased by calling 314-534-1111 or visiting www.metrotix.com.
