The King Still Reigns

You've gotta think that even though he's playing that great big piano in the sky, the King of Ragtime, Scott Joplin, is pretty happy with the way things are going here on Earth — at least as far as his legacy is concerned. His home has been fixed up and renamed the Scott Joplin House State Historic Site (fancy, huh?), and thanks to the Missouri Department of Natural Resources and other groups, live ragtime music can be heard there often. In fact, you can drop by the site's New Rosebud Café (2658A Delmar Boulevard; 314-340-5790) on Saturday, February 16, for a taste of that old-timey sound during the Rosebud Ball. The party runs from 7 to 10 p.m., and Nora and Mark Hulse bring the tunes. Then, if you're still wanting more, Nora returns at 2 p.m. on Sunday, February 17, to present the music and history of various women ragtime players and composers. Both events are free, and you can find more information at www.mostateparks.com/scottjoplin.htm.
