Global warming may have caused polar bears' numbers to dwindle dramatically in the last decade, but Lake Saint Louis is anticipating a temporary population explosion at the fifth annual Polar Bear Plunge. Last year, hundreds of shivering souls took a dip in the frigid waters of Lake Saint Louise, raising more than $80,000 for the Special Olympics. Along with prizes for the top fundraisers, participants are encouraged to be creative: The coveted Golden Plunger Award will be presented for best individual and group costumes. Registration begins at noon at the Lake Saint Louis Community Association Clubhouse (100 Cognac Court), with plungers scheduled for a 2 p.m. splash. The cost for a dip is a minimum $50 pledge, but spectators can cheer on the plungers for free.
