Kubrick, Brick by Brick

Few filmmakers are as revered as Stanley Kubrick. This Friday, February 22, the Ethical Society of St. Louis launches a series celebrating the man and his works with the documentary A Life in Pictures. The film follows Kubrick from his early years as a photographer for Look magazine to his first forays into filmmaking and on through the creation of his defining works. Family members, collaborators and colleagues including Jack Nicholson, Nicole Kidman and long-time friend Steven Spielberg offer an intimate look at the reclusive filmmaker and his methods. From the early, compromised success of Spartacus to the backlash Kubrick suffered for A Clockwork Orange, no stone is left unturned. A Life in Pictures begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Ethical Society (9001 Clayton Road, Richmond Heights; 314-991-0955 or www.ethicalstl.org). Admission is free, but donations are welcome. Future films in the series include Lolita, Dr. Strangelove, Paths of Glory and The Killing, Kubrick's bravura film-noir heist flick starring Sterling Hayden and Marie Windsor.
