The frictions of mother-daughter relationships are the stuff of dramatic gold, from the maternal shame that drives Stephen King's titular Carrie into madness to the hard lessons imparted down the generations in Toni Morrison's Beloved. These bonds are thoroughly tested in Marsha Norman's 'night, Mother, in which middle-aged divorcee Jessie prepares to say "goodnight" to her elderly mother one last time and then announces her intention to commit suicide. The seemingly divergent arcs of middle-class stagnation and righteous self-actualization butt heads in this play, which won Norman the Pulitzer Prize. Stray Dog Theatre presents 'night, Mother at the Tower Grove Abbey (2336 Tennessee Avenue) at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday (February 28 through March 14), with a final performance at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 15.
