Power to the Puppets

Everything I need to know about life, I learn from puppets. The happy and helpful denizens of Sesame Street, the creepy and wise Letter People, The Dark Crystal's moral Mystics and vile Skeksis, the demented and clever Sifl and Olly — all of them shaped my view of the world. When I need enlightenment or guidance or just a fresh perspective on life, I look to a puppet. So, of course, I have high hopes for the Boxcutter Cabaret Puppet Tour. This free-range assemblage of puppeteers, musicians and mentors offers a full evening of learnin', starting at 7:30 p.m. at the Community Arts and Media Project (3026 Cherokee Street; 314-727-8554). The puppets of the Modern Times Theater take on the fallacy of modern convenience, advocating instead a return to the raw-knuckled days of "old-timey difficulty." The Dolly Wagglers deal in lowbrow humor (a puppet specialty), and the R.P.M. Puppet Conspiracy addresses the apocalyptic vision that is global capitalism's belief in the disposable planet. All of this and live music by CAMP's brass and string ensemble for just $2 to $5 at the door.
