Venus de St. Louis

While Freud's theories on psychosexual development make for an interesting conversation over a bottle of pinot, many of his concepts are considered flawed and no longer applicable. Always ahead of the psychoanalytic curve, Venus Envy, an all-female art event (eat your heart out, Sigmund), is celebrating not its first, but its tenth annual artstravaganza tonight at the Mad Art Gallery (2727 South 12th Street). Jacquelyn Lewis-Harris, director of the Center for Human Origins & Cultural Diversity at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, is the curator of this year's Envy, which showcases painting, sculpture, installations, collage and music by fifteen local artists (including Jane Linders whose work is pictured) as well as works by national artists Joyce Owens, Mary Dritschel and Jewel Castro. The VIP preview party ($45 to $55) offers a sneak peek of the exhibition and refreshments from 5:30 to 8 p.m. The main event runs from 8 p.m. until midnight and features live music and a cash bar; general-admission tickets are $5 at the door. For more information or to purchase tickets to the preview party, call 314-324-4912 or visit www.venusenvy.org.
