That's a Brutal Look

Long before Sacha Baron Cohen popularized the "mankini" in Borat, an equally hairy, pony-tailed Sean Connery sported his own he-man bikini (accessorized by thigh-high leather boots) as Zed in John Boorman's sci-fi film, Zardoz. It's a can't-miss, post-apocalyptic, cerebral acid-trip of a flick, populated by psychics, a flying stone head, the proverbial tip o' the hat to The Wizard of Oz, copious sex and violence and, more than a few technical errors. Zed's an Exterminator, meaning he kills the Brutals (primitive people) to appease the god Zardoz. Zed decides to find out if Zardoz is really a god and discovers a secret society of Eternals who manipulate the Exterminators and the Brutals for their own amusement. Zardoz screens at 8 p.m. at the Schlafly Bottleworks (7260 Southwest Avenue, Maplewood; www.webster.edu/filmseries or 314-968-7487 or), as part of Webster University's Strange Brew film series. Admission is $4.
