This snowy, cold winter has left you more anxious than ever to commune with nature. So get out in your yard and start communing already! But before you go throwing random plants in the ground, you need to think this through. You don’t want to sow the wrong seeds and encourage unwelcome visitors, such as flower-eating monster bugs, for example; you need to plant flora that will attract the pretties of spring, like butterflies and hummingbirds. The St. Louis chapter of the North American Butterfly Association can help you in this, your foliage time of need. The group hosts “Gardening for Butterflies and Hummingbirds,” a free program at the Powder Valley Conservation Nature Center (11715 Cragwold Road, Kirkwood). The talk begins at 7 p.m. and features experienced area gardeners who can do up a green space right for our flying friends — and they tell you how to do so, too, with the aid of photos.
