Mad for Plaid

Still recovering from your green beer-and-blarney bacchanal on St. Patrick’s Day? It may seem like the Irish have all the fun, but their Celtic brethren in Scotland also know how to throw a party. Scottish heritage will be on display as the annual Missouri Tartan Day Festival takes place this Friday through Sunday (April 4 through 6) at Frontier Park in St. Charles (South Main Street and First Capitol Drive). Since “tartan” refers to the distinct plaid patterns that served as tribal colors back in the Highlands, you can count on seeing numerous kilted men with their tall socks, strategically placed leather pouches and proud gazes. The festival opens at 10 a.m. on Sunday with the Kirkin o’ the Tartan (get your plaid blessed!) on the main stage, and closes at 4:30 p.m. with a mass pipe band. In between are more live musical performances, parades and kids’ activities. Admission is free, and concessions will be available. For more information, visit www.motartanday.com or call 314-664-8309.
