Over the last decade, the Massachusetts label Signature Sounds has been quietly assembling a sparkling roster of folkies who seem more interested in mastering songcraft than they do sipping the sonic vanilla syrup of latte nation. Milwaukee native Peter Mulvey's 2007 Signature release, Notes From Elsewhere, proves there's much vitality left in acoustic guitars and vernacular stories, if one is willing to study Mississippi John Hurt and John Fahey and dig through easy fatalism for lines like "It's the same old thirst till they put me in the dirt" and "Keep for yourself the thrill of my favorite sin." With a thick baritone slur and barbed fingerstyle guitar work, Mulvey makes bitterness sweet and makes less a whole lot more.
