Winging It

Much as in-the-know humans flock to exotic spots like Bali, so do clued-in birds make their way to cities along the Mississippi River. There’s just something so avian about these river towns! Even pelicans are showing up around here now — crazy, right? To celebrate these flyover visitors as well as many, many other winged wonders, get to the Riverlands Environmental Demonstration Area (301 Riverlands Way, West Alton) for the Wings of Spring Confluence Birding Festival (www.wingsofspring.org). During this daylong affair (it runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.), you can hear stories about birds, tour the locale on a Segway ($80; advance registration required), build a birdhouse, flap your wings to live music, meet some raptors and even kayak down Big Muddy ($30; advance registration required). To learn more about the fest and to sign up for any extra fun, call 800-258-6645; admission to Wings of Spring is free, as are most activities.
