Pig out on pig meat

Barbecue comes from the Latin word "bobaquum," which can be loosely translated as "Bob, make that shit tasty." All right, our etymology may be suspect, but our love of the barbecued pork steak is not. If you also would rather eat food than discuss it, blaze a trail to the Schlafly Bottleworks (7260 Southwest Avenue, Maplewood; 314-241-2337 or www.schlafly.com) for this year's Brew & Q and World Pork Steak Championships. The former is your opportunity to mill around the expansive Bottleworks lot, listening to the music of Rough Shop and Cumberland Gap while drinking beer and devouring barbecued meats from 5 to 10 p.m. on Friday, May 23. From noon to 10 p.m. on Saturday, May 24, local teams of amateur grillmeisters apply the heat to the meat (a mouth-watering, sixteen-ounce, center-cut pork steak) and vie for the title of World Pork Steak Champion. Admission is free both days, but barbecue and beers will set you back a few bucks. A few sauce-stained, well-spent bucks.
