Russian Circles

9 p.m. Wednesday, June 4. The Bluebird, 2706 Olive Street

Russian Circles is a post-rock, post-metal, post-everything instrumental band from Chicago that may be redefining the term "power trio." With amps that go to 11,000 and an innovative, subtle use of live-guitar-and-bass looping, this three-headed beast creates more noise than most groups twice their size. (It also doesn't hurt that former St. Louisan Dave Turncrantz hits the drum skins like a Don Caballero-obsessed octopus.) Russian Circles is most often compared to fellow Chicago sludge-riffers Pelican, but when the long, multi-faceted songs on its Suicide Squeeze debut, Station, reach their dramatic climaxes, the clattering cymbals and elephantine power chords resemble fireworks so bright they could make Explosions in the Sky consider a name change.
