Among certain musical enclaves, the Cannanes are held in the highest and most reverent esteem. For more than two decades, this Australian band has personified a specific strain of underground pop music: fragile male-female vocals, smart and sardonic lyrics, lots of strummy guitars and keyboards, and a sophisticated (if occasionally shambling) melodic approach. It's released almost a dozen albums on almost as many labels, toured the world a few times and influenced many, many bands along the way. 2008 sees the premiere of Short Poppy Syndrome, a documentary covering their long and storied career. The Cannanes are only playing six American tour dates this time around: If you don't seize the chance to see their first St. Louis appearance, you will regret it later.
