It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World

But it's pretty funny, too

By Mark Fischer

Published on June 18, 2008

Mad magazine has been blowing raspberries at authority figures and pop-culture icons since its debut in 1952, and its impact on our national sense of humor is so vast, it's impossible to quantify. This summer, the St. Louis Artists' Guild (2 Oak Knoll Park, Clayton) offers a rare look at original art and significant printed pieces from Mad's legendary "usual gang of idiots," with annotations to help viewers put the work in historical perspective. Artists represented include Jack Davis, Don Martin, Mort Drucker (his work is pictured), Dave Berg, Sergio Aragones and Al Jaffee. In addition, the exhibit includes samples of the Mad artists' work on album covers, posters and magazines. The opening reception for this show and four others, all fitting under the moniker of Marked Surfaces, is held Sunday, June 22, from 1 to 3 p.m. Admission is free, and the exhibits remain on display through Saturday, September 6. For more information call 314-727-6266 or go to www.stlouisartistsguild.org.
Tuesdays-Sundays. Starts: June 22. Continues through Sept. 6, 2008
