Tie-dye, pot leaves and magical mushrooms are the standard fare for drug-rock imagery, but Pittsburgh's psychedelic trio Modey Lemon opted for a barrage of candy and fruit on the cover of its 2008 record Season of Sweets. The saccharine-filled visuals represent more than just the album title, though; rather than approach its stoner riffs with the bong-ripped reservation of contemporaries such as Black Mountain, Modey Lemon prefers to jam in a sugar-buzzed frenzy, like Black Sabbath chugging energy drinks. Most of Sweets' songs feature fuzzed-out, wailing guitars and vicious, fearless drumming (think Keith Moon playing while falling down an escalator), but the album's sweetest moment is "It Made You Dumb," a noisy pop anthem that recalls Yo La Tengo's more rocking numbers.
