Keep Your Ears on the Ball

They got the beep

Some of us on the Riverfront Times softball squad have a hard enough time getting solid hits with 20/20 vision — imagine trying to make contact without the benefit of eyesight. Beepball, a form of baseball for the visually impaired, helps people play the game with the use of high-pitched beeps emitted from the ball. The Saint Louis Beepbirds will defend their title at the Ultimate Saint Louis Beepball Championship, which takes place at GCS Ballpark (Mousette Lane and Goose Lake Road, Sauget, Illinois). For a small donation, fans will have a chance to experience the sport for themselves by donning a blindfold and stepping into the batter's box. The event starts at 2 p.m., and proceeds benefit the Minds Eye Information Service, an organization that provides broadcasting and reading services for the blind and print-impaired. For more information call 618-394-6443 or visit www.mindseyeradio.org. Admission is free.
