Red Any Good Books Lately?

Birds, bats and best games ever

Mention Jose Oquendo and it comes up — "it" being the Cardinals' utility man's now-legendary stint as a pitcher. Four innings pitched in a game against the Atlanta Braves, and Oquendo proved forever that he was worthy of his nickname "The Secret Weapon." Maybe you witnessed it, maybe you've only heard it about over the years, but it's an essential element of Cardinals lore. Author Matthew Leach spoke with Oquendo about his famous game, along with many other former Redbirds regarding their most memorable games in a Cards uniform, for his new book, Game of My Life: St. Louis Cardinals. Leach compiles several generations worth of favorite memories in one handy volume — a book so utilitarian it's almost Oquendoian in nature. Leach reads from and discusses Game of My Life at 7 p.m. at Left Bank Books (399 North Euclid Avenue; 314-367-6731 or www.left-bank.com). Admission is free.
