Is St. Louis the New Brussels?

Or is Brussels the old St. Louis?

One of the most pleasant ways to spend one’s summer evening is eating moules frites (mussels and fries) on the terrace of a Belgian café. Alas, if you’re reading this right now, that particular joy is likely not on your weekend agenda. But if you can’t have mussels in Brussels, you can have them here at home. We may not have the EU Parliament in St. Louis, but we do share with Belgium a French-German mongrel heritage and a tradition of fine brewing. No surprise, then, that the Schlafly Tap Room (2100 Locust Street; 314-241-2447 or www.schlafly.com) is presenting four Belgian-style beers at Mussel Mania from 5 p.m. to midnight on Friday and Saturday (July 18 and 19). Sip a witbier or a tripel while slurping sweet Penn Cove mussels and dancing to the Wormwood Scrubs and The Scissormen. There’s a mussel eating contest and – what else? – Belgian waffles for dessert.
