Opening Gambit

Checkers is for tramps

Although it’s primarily thought of as an intellectual pursuit, chess can and will break your heart. As chess grandmaster and famed raconteur Savielly Tartakower once noted, “A chess game is divided into three stages. The first, when you hope you have the advantage, the second, when you believe you have an advantage, and the third... when you know you're going to lose!” But you can’t get better if you don’t experience that third stage of the game many, many times, as painful as it may be. And so the brand-new Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Saint Louis would very much like to help break your chess-lovin’ heart in a very loving and instructive fashion. Located at 4657 Maryland Avenue (314-361-2437 or www.saintlouischessclub.org), the club offers players of all levels a place to come and talk chess, think chess and play chess with peers and mentors. The club officially opens to the public at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 17; admission for this day only is free, so stop by and check out the facilities .Membership in the club is open to all, so check the website for rates — students, it’s very affordable.
