Washers is one of the more enjoyable yard activities out there. The game is portable and easy to set up, and even if you aren't very skilled at throwing the small metal discs anywhere near where you want to, it's still fun to play, eat some food and hang out with friends. Pretty much the only thing that could improve upon this summertime barbecue tradition is if all of the good times benefited a worthy cause — such as the Missouri Coalition for People with Limb Loss. Fortunately, the Charity Barbecue & Washer Toss for Limb Loss does just that. Held today from 4 to 8 p.m. at the pavilion at Des Peres Park (1501 North Ballas Road, Des Peres), this outing offers up free food and washers, all to raise awareness — and, hopefully, some donations — for prosthetic parity in Missouri. Right now, some insurance coverage requires that an amputee wear the same prosthetic device as a child and as an adult. The MCPLL is working to get legislation passed to correct this insurance-cap problem. To learn more about the cause and the barbecue, call 314-835-1910 or visit www.molimbloss.blogspot.com.
