Eight Is Great

St. Louis Black Pride's mission statement requires that the group be a resource for the St. Louis black GLBT community. The eighth annual St. Louis Black Gay Pride Weekend proves that the group takes this mission to heart: For three days (Friday through Sunday, August 15 through 17), Black Pride provides a host of activities and information for its constituents and allies. The Black Pride opening reception from 5 to 10 p.m. on Friday at the Drury Plaza Hotel (2 South Fourth Street; free admission) is but a prelude to the festivities, where you can meet and mingle with the folks you'll party with at the Black Pride Kickoff Afterparty from 11 p.m. to 2 a.m. at the Space (322 North Vandeventer Avenue; admission is $7). Saturday's big event is the St. Louis Black Gay & Lesbian Film Festivalfrom 6 to 10 p.m. at the Regional Arts Commission (6128 Delmar Boulevard; $6). Four films explore the black gay experience, including The Aggressives, Daniel Peddle's acclaimed documentary about six black women who live as highly masculine men in New York City. The weekend comes to a close with Festival in the Plaza from 2 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Kiener Plaza, with live entertainment, concessions and a health fair; admission to this is free.
