Slaves to Passion

Comedy tonight in Florissant

The words "slave" and "hilarity" are generally mutually exclusive — with a few notable exceptions, such as in the Stephen Sondheim/Burt Shrevelove & Larry Gelbart musical A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. In this bawdy Broadway favorite, Pseudolus, a freedom-seeking slave, makes use of his wits to assist his courtesan-yearning master in the game of love and deception. Along the way lusty songs, such as "Everybody Ought to Have a Maid" and "That Dirty Old Man," are sung, and farce-driven tomfoolery abounds. Will Pseudolus be released from his shackles? Behold ancient-Roman-inspired drama at the Florissant Civic Center Theatre (Parker Road and Waterford Drive, Florissant) when Bravo Theatre Group presents A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum at 8 p.m. Friday and 2 and 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday (August 29 to 31). Tickets are $12 to $15, and proceeds benefit three local charities. For more information visit www.bravotheatregroup.org or call 314-921-5678.
