With the passage of time, Richard M. Nixon's image has softened to that of a stock character, a sure laugh-getter with his easily imitated mannerisms and jowly hunch. But in 1977 Nixon was viewed as either a martyr or the epitome of corruption, depending on your party affiliation — and he was always terrible on television. So it came as a surprise when the intellectual and ambitious David Frost roped Nixon into a series of televised interviews in which the defensive former President would discuss what he knew and when he knew it — maybe. Peter Morgan transformed this historic tête-à-tête into a witty drama that exposes the vanity and grasping nature of both men in his play Frost/Nixon, which opens the Repertory Theatre of St. Louis' new season at 8 p.m. Wednesday, September 3, at the Loretto-Hilton Center (130 Edgar Road, Webster Groves; 314-968-4925 or www.repstl.org). Performances continue through Sunday, September 28 (every night except Monday). Tickets are $14.50 to $65.
