Even folks who don't like musicals give props to The Music Man. Maybe it's because a story about a smooth-talking shyster who pulls one over on the simple citizens of River City goes against the public's saccharine-sweet perception of what a musical is. Or maybe they just like the songs. "Trouble," "Marian the Librarian" and "Gary, Indiana" — they're all here and sung with gusto as charlatan Harold Hill organizes a boys' band in an effort to swindle cash from the townsfolk (the band members need uniforms and instruments, after all). Stages St. Louis brings this musical to life at 8 p.m. Wednesday, September 10, in the Robert G. Reim Theatre (111 South Geyer Road, Kirkwood; 314-821-2407). Tickets cost $24 to $46. The Music Man is staged through Sunday, October 5; step lively to www.stagesstlouis.org for all the details.
