They Read, You Listen

It's a pretty nice arrangement, really

You might have learned that Missouri named its first poet laureate earlier this year. And then you may have realized that you've never heard of the guy. Lucky for you, at 8 p.m. at the Schlafly Bottleworks (7260 Southwest Avenue, Maplewood), you'll have an opportunity to not only lay eyes on Missouri poet laureate Walter Bargen, but you'll have a chance to listen to this Ashland, Missouri, resident read from his work as well. This event — which kicks off the 2008/2009 Observable Readings Series (now presented by the St. Louis Poetry Center) — also features a reading by Tom Pickard (pictured), a poet from the border area between England and Scotland who was a vital part of the British Poetry Revival of the 1960s. Your evening of beautiful verse is free; learn more about the series at www.stlouispoetrycenter.org.
